The California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) proudly announces a notable milestone in its ongoing mission to support Thoroughbred aftercare. The organization’s Thoroughbred Placement Program has grown significantly, now accommodating around 20 horses, up from 13-14 during the challenging pandemic years. This expansion is made possible through the generous bequest of the late Nancy Messineo, whose dedication to the welfare of retired racehorses has left a lasting impact.
CARMA’s Placement Program plays a crucial role in facilitating the transition of Thoroughbreds from the racetrack to approved aftercare non-profit organizations that are better suited to place the horses into second careers or permanent sanctuaries. As a trusted resource for Thoroughbred owners, the Placement Program offers a safe and reliable pathway for retiring racehorses, ensuring they are well cared for as they move into the next phase of their lives.
Based at Santa Anita Park, CARMA serves Thoroughbred owners throughout California. It works closely with each horse’s connections to ensure that proper retirement steps are taken. The program leverages a network of specialized layup facilities that provide essential rehabilitation, allowing Thoroughbreds the time to recuperate and adjust to life off the track.
“We are incredibly grateful for Nancy Messineo’s generosity and her enduring commitment to the welfare of Thoroughbreds,” said Lucinda Lovitt, Executive Director at CARMA. “Her legacy lives on through the horses that will benefit from the enhanced resources and opportunities made possible by her bequest.”
As CARMA continues to grow its Placement Program, the organization remains dedicated to providing retired racehorses with the best possible outcomes, whether through second careers or permanent sanctuary placements.
